Ubuntu is a community developed operating system suitable to run on laptops, desktops and servers. Ubuntu contains ‘out of the box’ applications for word processing, email, web server software and programming tools.
A new desktop and server release is issued every six months. As an example of Ubuntu’s feature set, the desktop edition comes with the following applications:
A complete office productivity suite with word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software, a vast library of free software, help and support, a multitude of languages to choose from and support for 32 and 64 bit computing.

have tried couple of Open source OS’es by now (UNIX/LINUX based) and would personally vote for Ubuntu as the best so far in terms of desktop OS, and undoubtedly the best choice if you need to install it on your Laptop.
