Has lots of features and works with almost any format known to man. The user interface is a bit different, but you get used to it after a while. You also quickly get used to the fact that it's free...

VLC is a great cross-platform media player with support for dozens of codecs. Its configuration/preferences dialog could be made easier, but it does what it advertises right out of the box, and does it well. I highly recommend VLC.

Doesn't do QuickTime, but that's what QuickTime Player is for. And, honestly, who uses Real video anymore?

Regarding the subtitle vulnerability, it appears that local file subtitles and the web interface to VLC are susceptible. The remote interface is off by default, according to the report. Also, if you're behind any kind firewall (such as an off-the-shelf home router that does NAT), you'll also be protected from remote exploits. I imagine the hole will be cleared up in the next release, anyway.

@alifaan: I don't think security bugs warrant giving such terrible ratings and reviews. It's already fixed in the nightly builds according to the very article you linked to.

VLC Media Player is a fine player, though it does not support .ass subtitles to my knowledge, which is very disappointing for those of us that watch things with high quality stylized subtitles. As such, I'd recommend the Combined Community Codec Pack to Windows users, and anything based on mplayer for Linux or Mac users since adding support for .ass is as easy as copy and pasting a line into a configuration file.

Yeah, I like VLC Player too, but i just read this news about VLC.
It tells that if you are one of the users who use VLC player then it is most likely that a 3rd party hacker can take control of your machine while sitting on another machine.
The full story u can read at http://torrentfreak.com/vlc-player-vulnerable-remote-hijack-080318/

VLC Player is a simple, light weight and feature-rich media player. I've been using VLC Player for quite a while and I'm hugely impressed by it's usability. It supports almost all formats. Few days ago i downloaded a video file which was is OGM format. I don't know what format was that. I tried playing it with VLC Player. It worked. Among all other media player, VLC Player stands alone with it's simplicity and usability. Highly recommended.

BTW, VLC does not support real media and apple's media formats. You will still need Quicktime and Real Player.
