POV is very flexible and very capable tool that has been around for many many years. Its scene description language is very flexible (but for those who are afraid of text-input numerous modellers exist) and the output is of very high quality. It needs some getting used to, but the results, as evident by the IRTC, are worth it.

This is for those who can’t afford Poser, or for the hardcore types who like to do things themselves because it feels better that way. And for the brave, too… Modelling characters is sculpture in a 3D environment : you’ll need a lot of free time and some artistic training will certainly help.
