Since a request was posted in the forum maintenance section about getting things going again, I thought I might post some topics where people could share and discuss their favorite Open Source applications in various categories.  This might also be a good opportunity to discuss common tasks that you do with a computer and what Open Source programs would be good for completing them.

For instance, if I want to play Karaoke on my computer, there are several applications I like to use.  I use abc2midi to create the Karaoke midi file.  I use midicomp if I need to edit an already created midi file and don't have the original abc file.  The only Open Source karaoke player I've run across is Timidity++.  You need the latest patches in cvs from Sourceforge to get the lyrics to display properly.  Maybe someone else has some alternative suggestions?  I use some of the soundfonts at the Freepats site in connection with Timidity++ to get quality instrument sounds during playback.  Timidity++ will convert the Karaoke midi file to wave which can then be converted with Audacity to mp3 or ogg vorbis.  The mp3 or ogg vorbis file can also be played with UltraStar or UltraStar Delux.  However, I haven't had much luck with either program in recognizing tones from my microphone.  Am wondering if anyone else has.

For music playback, I like to use Timidity++, MilkyTracker and Audacity.

By the way, these programs should all work on Windows and Linux (and possibly Mac).  The only exception I know of is Ultrastar and there is an alternate version of it at Sourceforge for Linux.

If anyone has an other Open Source music related programs they'd like to share or any music related tasks they're trying to do with their computer using Open Source, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
