Hello! My name is Danny and I am new to the idea of open source. I have spent my whole life on windows and recently decided to give Ubuntu a try on my desktop at home. The idea of an Open Source lifestyle seems interesting and I have always wanted to give Linux based systems a try. I would love to learn about programming in my free time but I really don’t even know where to start. I am happy to find this site and I hope to spend some time on the forums asking plenty of questions.  Grin

I really want to understand how drivers work so that I can help find or make my own drivers for Linux. I use dial-up at home so I would really love to learn how the drivers for that work since it seems to be very hard to find drivers for V92 modems. In fact, I am still searching for a new modem that has Linux drivers out for it. Aside from that, I would like to learn the language that lin/ubuntu is programmed.

Welcome to the OSLiving Forums Danny, glad to have you here and really glad that you're experimenting with OSS.

Don't hesitate to tell us more about your experiences with software, if you feel motivated you might even like to review some of the Archive items that you try out and let others know about your experience.

Thanks.

Hello Danny!

First of all, welcome to OSLiving! If you want to start to learn programming, I would recommend you to begin with scripting languages like Python or Ruby. They are both easy to learn, and also powerful. As far as I know, the driver creation thing is somewhat complicated, mostly because you will have to write a program that interfaces directly with your hardware.

If you have any questions, post them! We'll help you out as much as we can!  Smiley
