Moodle is a course management system (CMS) – a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a University with 200,000 students.
Moodle has many features expected from an e-learning platform. It is modular in construction and can readily be extended by creating plugins for specific new functionality. Moodle’s infrastructure supports many types of plugin:
Activities; Resource types; Question types; Data field types (for the database activity); Graphical themes; Authentication methods; Enrollment methods; Content Filters and more.

Moodle is a fantastic open source learning environment which has been produced by teachers so it is stuctured in a way you can easily utilise the priniciples of learning. With a massive growing network of developers and users, support is always at hand and there are numerous hacks and add-ons.
Be careful who you use to host your site as best performance requires specific php.ini settings and a database.
I’m using moodle, but i dont like very much… i am dreaming a cms and i wish iwill produce it until 2010
Just cannot praise Moodle enough. Amazing software and an amazing community.
