Edubuntu is an educational operating system that is a part of the Ubuntu family. It aims to make Ubuntu, the popular Linux-based operating system, a great choice for the computing needs of children, students, parents, teachers, and schools.

“Ubuntu” is an ancient African word, meaning “humanity to others”. Edubuntu seeks to bring the freedoms and spirit of Ubuntu to children, parents, students, teachers, and schools.

Included with Edubuntu is the Linux Terminal Server Project, a large number of educational applications including GCompris, KDE Edutainment Suite, and Schooltool Calendar.

The first Edubuntu release coincided with the release of Ubuntu 5.10, which was codenamed Breezy Badger on 2005-10-13. Edubuntu CDs were previously available for free through their Shipit service. However, as of version 8.10, it is only available as a download.

Qimo is a desktop operating system designed for kids. Based on the open source Ubuntu Linux desktop, Qimo comes pre-installed with educational games for children aged 3 and up.

Qimo’s interface has been designed to be intuitive and easy to use, providing large icons for all installed games, so that even the youngest users have no trouble selecting the activity they want.

Qimo is based on Xubuntu; a community maintained derivative of the Ubuntu operating system, using the Xfce desktop environment.[4][5] This helps provide low hardware requirements; minimum of 256MB of memory to run from the CD, or 192MB to install. At least 6 GB of hard drive space is recommended, and a 400 MHz or faster CPU.[2] Qimo currently uses 8.04 LTS with plans to use the next LTS Lucid Lynx.

Differences between Qimo & Edubuntu:

- Qimo was designed to be a standalone home computer for kids

- Edubuntu was designed for networked classroom computer use

- Qimo will run from a LiveCD

- From October 2008 to October 2009, Edubuntu required an existing Ubuntu installation. Edubuntu is available in a live medium, but only on a DVD, as its contents will not fit on a CD anymore.

- Qimo and Edubuntu are working to bring the Qimo games and artwork as an installable option within Edubuntu.

It was designed for easy installation, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G modem support all included. The operating system supports all the major netbooks, including models from Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, MSI, Samsung and Sony.

Version 1.0 of the operating system incorporates a user interface built with HTML5 that includes an application launcher, a library of compatible applications with one-click installation and removal, a display of all machines associated with user account, and a social activity stream that enables users to compare installed applications.

Inquisitor is an open-source hardware testing and certification system, suitable for both enterprise and home use, customizable, modular and available in both serverless Live CD/DVD format and server-controlled network boot production system.

It can analyze and test your hardware from top to the bottom and assure that it won’t fail easily under the production stress.

Inquisitor is:

    * Flexible: you can adjust just about any parameter in analysis or testing process and customize the system to the widest extent.
* Modular: it’s made up from a series of interchangeable modules; one can easily add new modules to add new tests, detections, production steps, etc.
* Intelligent: server-based version includes a database that stores all the data on all computers that were tested by Inquisitor. If only some parts of hardware will change, clever scheduler won’t redo all the long testing, but only tests relevant to hardware changes.
* Distributed: due to modular architecture, Inquisitor can be easily distributed across a cluster to distribute load or make a geographically distributed system.
* Scalable: it could be helpful to analyse/test just one home computer or all the computers in your organization, up to multiple thousands computers in manufacturing enterprise.
* Free as in speech: the base platform is distributed under the GPL license.
* Mature: Inquisitor is based on a rock-solid Linux technology and is under active development since 2004. There are multiple production enterprise installations relying on it.

PC/OS is an open source operating system that concentrates on bringing ease of use and unsurpassed desktop performance to the client desktop and Server arena.

PC/OS is the first Linux based distribution that provides ease of use out of the box. It provides all multimedia codecs out of the box, an easy to use and simplified interface. Great compatibility with older hardware to help you extend your hardware and software investments. Being based on Ubuntu Linux all software and hardware that is compatible with Ubuntu is compatible with PC/OS.

Debian is an operating system that uses the Linux kernel and toolsfrom the GNU project; hence the name Debian GNU/Linux.

Debian is known for its adherence to the Unix and free software philosophies, and for its abundance of options — the current release includes over twenty-six thousand software packages for eleven computer architectures. These architectures range from the Intel/AMD 32-bit/64-bit architectures commonly found in personal computers to the ARM architecture commonly found in embedded systems and the IBM eServer zSeries mainframes.

A prominent feature of Debian is its package management system (especially APT), for its strict policies regarding its packages and the quality of its releases. These practices afford easy upgrades between releases and easy automated installation and removal of packages. Debian uses an open development and testing process. It is developed by volunteers from around the world and supported by donations through SPI, Inc., a non-profit umbrella organization for free software projects.

OpenBSD is a multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system with an emphasis on portability, standardization, correctness, proactive security and integrated cryptography.

OpenBSD is a Unix-like computer operating system descended from Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), a Unix derivative developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It was forked from NetBSD by project leader Theo de Raadt in late 1995.

The project is widely known for the developers’ insistence on open source code and quality documentation; uncompromising position on software licensing; and focus on security and code correctness. The project is coordinated from de Raadt’s home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Its logo and mascot is Puffy, a pufferfish.

OpenBSD includes a number of security features absent or optional in other operating systems and has a tradition of developers auditing the source code for software bugs and security problems.

The project maintains strict policies on licensing and prefers the open source BSD licence and its variants—in the past this has led to a comprehensive licence audit and moves to remove or replace code under licences found less acceptable.
