MTPaint is a light-weight graphics editor and paint program for Windows and Linux that comes with an interesting feature set.

mtPaint is a painting program which Mark Tyler developed from scratch so he could easily create pixel art and manipulate digital photos. It uses the GTK+ toolkit (version 1 or 2) and runs on PC’s via the GNU/Linux or Windows operating systems. Due to its efficient design it can run on older PC hardware (e.g. a 200MHz CPU and 16MB of free RAM).

Some of its main features include the following:

- A comprehensive and user friendly interface with customizable toolbars, screen sizes, screen layouts, zoom sizes, up to 1000 undos and more.

- Pixel art capabilities that allow you to edit indexed palette or RGB images; save and load BMP, GIF, JPEG, LSS, PNG, TGA, TIFF, XPM, XBM files; use image channels: Alpha, Selection, Mask, all saved to a PNG file; create up to 100 layers; create animations and more.

- Image manipulation such as the ability to quickly transform image gamma, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, posterize from a single dialog, and preview the results in real time; apply various effects such as invert, greyscale, isometric transformations, edge detect, sharpen, unsharp mask, soften, Gaussian blur, emboss, bacteria; crop at the touch of a button and resize the canvas at will.

imgSeek is a photo collection manager and viewer with content-based search and many other features. The query is expressed either as a rough sketch painted by the user or as another image you supply (or an image in your collection).

Some of its core features include the following:

* You simply draw a rough sketch of what you want to find and imgSeek displays for you a thumbnail view of the best matches.

* Query images similar to one in your collection by double-clicking on it’s thumbnail.

* Group your photos by similarity for easy browsing. You may also have them clustered automatically by color, date (group events automatically using an adaptive clustering algorithm for time differences), filename or image features.

* Edit metadata (description, camera, lens, etc) for every image, and use them on the HTML albums generated or for searching photos. You can also use custom metadata fields.

* EXIF and IPTC data found on JPEG/TIFF files are automatically imported. (Read-only support)

* Advanced command-line utility to scan for new files, query for similar images and show image metadata. (You may use it on your cron system for example)

* Transform images or batches automatically: Place text captions, change brightness, contrast, blur, etc. Apply lossless rotations automatically if jpegtran is available.

* Generate HTML albums for the entire collection, a given d
directory or similarity group.

Wings 3D is a free and open source polygon mesh subdivision modeller ideally suited for modeling and texturing low to medium density polygon meshes. It has a wide range of very effective tools optimised for these tasks hidden behind its ‘minimalistic’ interface.

Designed as a stand-alone modeller, without animation or ‘proper’ rendering facilities it should not be confused with software that does include such features - although its modelling capabilities stand extremely favourable comparison with equivalent sections of such applications - whether free or commercial.

The use of ‘context-sensitive’ menus is the reason for its sparse look, whereby tool menus relevant to the current selection mode are only displayed when needed - so no ‘greyed out’ options.

Wings’ toolset often provides the user with many different workflow options for modeling and thus allows considerable flexibility of technique within its ‘box-modelling’ / ‘winged edge’ paradigm. (one example being the provision of a ‘hole’ material, thus allowing wings models to be exported to a wide range of other apps.)

Axel is an algebraic geometric modeler which aims to provide “algebraic modeling” tools for the manipulation and computation with implicit and parametric curves or surfaces.

Its primary goal is to embed Synaps algebraic capabilities to provide new modeling techniques.

Some of Axel’s core abilities are as follows:

- Topology : compute the certified topology of curves and surfaces with either implicit or parametric representation
- Intersections : compute the intersection of implicit or parametric curves or surfaces
- Self-intersections : compute the self-intersections of parametric surfaces whatever their parameterization
- Singularities : compute the singularities of algebraic surfaces
- Differential modeling : derivative curves, graphed surfaces
- Set theoretic modeling : boolean operations, arrangements
