Alien Arena 2008 is a free standalone deathmatch game based on source code released by id Software. Begun by COR Entertainment in 2004, the game combines a 1950s-era sci-fi atmosphere with gameplay similar to the Quake, Doom, and Unreal Tournament series. Alien Arena focuses mainly on online multiplayer action, although it does contain single player campaigns against bots.

The game is powered by the id Tech 2 based CRX Engine, which features 32 bit hi-res texture support, shaders, textured particles, stain maps, reflective water with refractive shaders, light bloom, real-time shadows, real-time vertex lighting, normal-mapping, and other modern effects, all of which can be turned on or off in the menu.

Also featured is an internal server browser for finding other people to play online and the external Code Red Galaxy program which also serves as an IRC interface.

Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer/singleplayer FPS, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS. The aim of this game is to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine

Sauerbraten (also known as Cube 2 or Sauer) is a Quake-like first-person shooter computer game that runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X. The game uses OpenGL and SDL, features single-player and multiplayer game play and contains a built-in level editor, which gives level designers “What you see is what you play” functionality.

The game currently has singleplayer and multiplayer modes. Multiplayer functionality is possible with LAN, Local, and Internet play, which gets its server data from a master server.

Online offers deathmatch, last man standing, and “capture” gameplay (where teams vie over control of points on the map), as well as online cooperative map editing, which is one of Sauerbraten’s most interesting and popular features.

There are also single player modes featuring both episodic gameplay and also deathmatch on multiplayer maps with AI bots instead of human opponents over the internet.

Nexuiz focuses on bringing the FPS genre back to the basics with quick, lethal battles and balanced weaponry. As of the current release there are 9 weapons and 24 official maps, as well as 15 player models, with an average of 2 skins each.

While Nexuiz is not intended to be an eye-candy laden game, it does feature many advanced effects such as coronas, bloom, Realtime World and Dynamic Lighting and shadowing, shaders (with OpenGL 2.0), offset mapping, and High dynamic range rendering. All these effects can be turned off to make the game run on older hardware. Nexuiz has such a range of effects that enabling all of them would result in an unplayable experience, apart from on the most cutting-edge of hardware.

Nexuiz is primarily multiplayer (though it includes a full single-player campaign, which allows one to play through the various multiplayer game types and maps with bots), and allows for hosting and joining of games. It can also support new gametypes, or whole conversions quickly applied to it (much like Quake). Nexuiz supports most, if not all, Quake modifications (although with varying functionality). Currently there are a few custom mods and maps used.

System Requirements:

400 MB of hard drive space
Windows 2000/XP/Vista (32-bit or 64-bit)
Mac OS X 10.4 or better (PPC or x86)
Linux Kernel 2.2 or better with glibc

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans.

Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more…

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the “Armoury”. The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.
