Sita Sings the Blues is a 2008 animated feature film written, directed, produced and animated entirely by American artist Nina Paley.The film mixes events from the ancient Indian epic tale, the Ramayana, with illustrated conversation between Indian shadow puppets, musical interludes voiced with tracks by Annette Hanshaw and scenes from the artist’s own life.

The film received acclaim from the New York Times and the Chicago Sun Times.

Valkaama

Valkaama is a no-budget, open source, full feature film based on Hendrick Behnisch’s novel by the same name. It tells the story of three young adults in search of a utopian society in northern Finland called Valkaama.

None of them are aware of the dangers and challenges that lie ahead and what starts out as a quest for poetry ends in tragedy.

Sintel

“Sintel” is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender.

Sintel is a young girl on a quest around the world to find a baby dragon she calls “Scales”. Back in her hometown, she first discovers Scales while looking for food. However, after discovering that the wing of the dragon was injured, she helps nurse it back to health. She develops a close bond with Scales, yet one day after its wing recovers and it begins to fly, it is taken away by a fully grown dragon. Sintel travels across the world in her attempt to rescue Scales, fighting off attacks from beasts and humans.

Big Buck Bunny

Big Buck Bunny is a follow-up to the successful “Elephants Dream” open movie project by the Blender Foundation. Again a small team (7) of the best 3D artists and developers in the Blender community were invited to work in Amsterdam from October 2007 to April 2008 on completing a short 3D animation movie. The team members were given studio facilities and housing in Amsterdam, all travel costs reimbursed, and a fee sufficient to cover all expenses during the period.

Stray Cinema

Stray Cinema is an open source film. Here you are able to download and re-edit raw footage from a film shot in New Zealand. This will provide people from all over the world with an opportunity to create their own version of the film.

Stray Cinema will navigate this film experiment out of the online digital world and into the ‘real world’ with a screening of the top five films in New Zealand. The footage shot in New Zealand is the second open source film provided by Stray Cinema.

Stray Cinema is an annual competition event.

Elephants Dream

Elephants Dream is the culmination of the Orange Open Movie Project, produced by the Blender Foundation and the Netherlands Media Art Institute. The project was conceived to help develop and establish the capabilities of the Blender 3D open source tool for the creation of cinema quality animation.

The film tells the story of Emo and Proog, two people with different visions of the surreal world in which they live. Viewers are taken on a journey through that world, full of strange mechanical birds, stunning technological vistas and machinery that seems to have a life of its own.

‘Elephants Dream’ features the voice talents of renowned Dutch movie actors Tygo Gernandt and Cas Jansen, as well as an original score by German composer Jan Morgenstern. The short brought together the talents of a team of artists from countries as diverse as Syria, Germany, Australia, Finland, and the Netherlands. In addition to the performances of the cast and creative efforts of the lead artists, Elephants Dream has had the assistance of hundreds of individuals across the world who contributed a variety of work such as programming additional functionality for Blender, creating textures used in some of the scenes, and providing international translations for the DVD release.
