Google is expanding the Google Wave Federation Protocol towards a more complete application or "Wave in a Box", an open source extension of their now discontinued real-time collaboration network.

Overview

Google will expand the 200K lines of code they’ve released under the Google Wave Federation Protocol to work towards a more complete application or “Wave in a Box.”

This project will include:

- An application bundle including a server and web client supporting real-time collaboration using the same structured conversations as the Google Wave system

- A fast and fully-featured wave panel in the web client with complete support for threaded conversations

- A persistent wave store and search implementation for the server (building on contributed patches to implement a MongoDB store)

- Refinements to the client-server protocols
gadget, robot and data API support

- Support for importing wave data from wave.google.com
the ability to federate across other Wave in a Box instances, with some additional configuration

Note that the project will not have the full functionality of Google Wave as it exists online today, although the intention is to provide developers and enterprising users an opportunity to run wave servers and host waves on their own hardware.

Further Reading & Resources

If you’re interested in learning more about Google Wave’s current capabilities in anticipation of the open source “Wave in a Box” version, consider Gina Trapani and Adam Pash’s Complete Guide to Google Wave.

Alternatively, you might want to take a look at the multi-author volume Beginning Google Wave for a comprehensive overview of the application and its relevance to online collaboration.

Diaspora is a privacy-aware, personally controlled, do-it-all distributed open source social network.

Diaspora offers an alternative to Facebook replacing FB’s centralized social web model with a more secure and convenient decentralized network.

Users have the choice of saving and controlling their data on their own hosting platform, or buying into a Diaspora one-click service. In both cases, private data is exportable across a range of platforms.

Diaspora will officially launch on the 15th September 2010. This entry will be updated with a full feature list as soon as the information is available.

WebGUI is an open source content management system built to give business users the ability to build and maintain
complex web sites. Today, WebGUI is in use as a framework in several Global 1000 companies and is the driving force
behind countless business and enterprise environments.

Like an application server, WebGUI handles all the mundane tasks such as database connectivity, session
management, and security. Then, WebGUI goes one step further. In WebGUI, custom applications can be built; once
built, those applications can be reused over and over throughout a site.

WebGUI provides power, versatility, and security. Everything in WebGUI is a template; this means everything in
WebGUI can be customized to meet an organization’s specific needs. Navigation menus can be configured and site
styles can be branded to make any site look and feel the way the organization intends. Existing applications can be
modified to perform and look as envisioned. WebGUI is made to perform to your standards. This is why WebGUI is
Web Done Right.
